A few Dallin videos, and a jaundice update.

July 18th, 2005

Here are 3 quick videos of Dallin. They aren’t the super best quality, but I was trying to keep the filesize down. Will put up the original files if anyone really wants them. Just say so in the comments.

First we have him in the nursury (11.5 MB 46 sec) less then an hour old.
Next is him looking around the room at 18 hours old (8.2 MB 33 sec).
Last, but not least, is my brother Brett, holding a baby for the first time in his life (11.5 MB 46 sec) … aren’t they both cute ;)

An update on Dallin’s jaundice problem…
We have gotten the billi blanket and it’s pretty cool. Haven’t taken any pics of it yet, but I am sure I will. It’s basically a projector, that takes all the light and channels it into fiber optics that then go into this 5×7 or so pad that you have to put on his body, covering as much surface area as possible. We switch it from front to back every 6 hours or so.

He has to wear it as much as possible througout the day for it to be effective. The guy that showed us how to use it said that 18 hrs of use will reduce his number by a point a day (he is a 20, and should be down below 9) and 22 hrs a day will reduce him by 3. Weird how it works so much better in those last few hours.

He said that it was kind of discovered by accident. Back however many years ago there was a nursury full of jaundice babies… and one room seemed to do much better then the others. Turned out it was the flourecent lights in that room, and so now that is what they use now as one of the best treatments.

Anyway… we have the checkup tomorrow morning and will post an update as to how he is doing, and hopefully a few more of those pictures I keep promising.

I wouldn’t mind a full res copy of me reciting Poe to your young one. No need to put it on the site, just e-mail it to me or something. Shambry and I were thinking of dropping by this weekend, if that’s ok.

Both our children had problems with jaundice when they were born. Duncan was admitted to the hospital on his first day out of the hospital as his levels were so high they thought they might have to do a blood transfusion. He was kept in an incubator for two days and then we too got the blanket. The blanket got changed to a “table”. Two weeks later he was OK.

Ally was lucky. She only had to stay under the lights the two days we were in the hospital after she was born.

The bummer about the lights is that you don’t get to hold them as much as you’d like :(

Luckily it is almost a month after you posted about his jaundice so I”m sure he is doing great!
